The Kenergy was alive and well at last night’s Oscars!
So, before we discuss Oscar winners and all that other fun stuff, let’s spend a post discussing the moment of the night: Ryan Gosling’s rousing performance of “I’m Just Ken” from Barbie!
Seeing Ryan channel that MMC energy into not only his Oscar-nominated performance in Barbie but also this live performance of “I’m Just Ken” was truly a sight to behold. There’s something about seeing this former indie darling don a sparkly pink suit while belting out his hit song and showing just what a bonafide movie star he’s become in front of a room of his peers that just pulls at the heartstrings a bit.
Much like the film, which took inspiration from classic cinema, such as Singing In The Rain for Ken’s “dream ballet,” last night’s performance continued that trend with a nod to the iconic Marilyn Monroe film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. TCM also noted inspiration from the 1930s film Dames on Instagram.
It was great to see the other Kens from the film, Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Ncuti Gatwa, and Scott Evans, in on the fun during the lively and highly choreographed number.
Getting to hear the song live with Ryan, Mark Ronson, Slash, and Wolfgang Van Halen was fantastic overall, and the production was beyond anything any of us could have imagined. It was more than Kenough.
A final Barbie plea to Mark Ronson & co.: Release “I’m Just Ken (Live at the Oscars)” to streaming platforms!
